Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown Officially Revealed, First Details (Map, Cars, Customization)
After years of rumours, leaks and speculation, Test Drive Unlimited is officially back with Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown, after almost a decade since the last entry in the widely regarded luxury-lifestyle MMO racer.
No longer developed by Eden Games and owned by Atari, Kylotonn Racing - the French developers behind the WRC, V-Rally and TT: Isle of Man games - are at the helms of this ambitious third Test Drive Unlimited title.
You can check out the very brief reveal teaser below showcasing various supercars we can expect to drive in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown.
Alain Jarniou, who had previously worked on both Test Drive Unlimited titles at Eden Games, returns as creative director for TDU Solar Crown at Kylotonn Racing, and shared various small details about what we can expect with this upcoming entry.
Jarniou revealed that much like previous entries, Solar Crown will be set on island and feature a game world built at 1:1 scale. He added that “everything you can see, you can visit”, meaning that the title will be much like The Crew in that there are no barriers and invisible walls. TDU Solar Crown will also be using KT Racing’s latest physic engine built for the WRC games.
In terms of cars, Jarniou has confirmed brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Buggati, with a Bugatti Chiron, Porsche 918 Spyder, and a Lamborghini Diablo shown in the reveal trailer. A Steam listing also mention brands such as Dodge and Koenigsegg, in addition to Porsche 911 and Cayenne.
Avatar Customization will return in TDU Solar Crown, with Jarniou explaining that there will be a wide variety of luxury clothes and accessories to choose from. We get a glimpse of customization in the trailer, showcasing an avatar wearing a suit with a Solar Crown logo on his cufflink, and another avatar wearing heels as they exit a car.
The Solar Crown subtitle suggests this new entry into the Test Drive Unlimited series will follow from Test Drive Unlimited 2, with Solar Crown being the name given to the in-game racing series that players competed in. Whats interesting is the trailer shows an 18+ rating logo, which could insist that the Casino from TDU2 may return.
Currently the only platform that’s been announced is PC via Steam, it is unknown just yet whether TDU Solar Crown will launch on current gen consoles and/or next gen consoles. A release date has yet to be revealed, suggesting the title may be further out than expected.
