A new entry in the Test Drive franchise has been seemingly in development for the last few years, with developer Kylotonn Racing at the helm of the next title since BigBen Interactive acquired the rights from Atari in 2018. Though information has been scarce about the project, a new leak suggests the title is much further along than expected and could launch later this year.

Posted over on Reddit by u/masterorange11online, the user claims to be a french developer currently working at Ubisoft Paris with several different connections to other French developers including Kylotonn Games, which have provided him details about TDU3 including its map, carlist, gameplay, multiplayer and more.

Do note that for now until anything is made official, these are just rumours and best to be taken with a grain of salt. What the user believes makes these details credible is this information had been relayed to him by the same sources who informed him of BigBen purchasing the TDU license days before it was made official.

Test Drive Unlimited 3 (internally codenamed Project Sunrise) will follow the same pattern of exotic maps from the previous games and will allegedly be set in South America, with the source believing Brazil is the location of the map. The map is said to be bigger than The Crew, with the developers wanting to develop a map the size of Fuel but will most likely be scaled down to be smaller.

As for cars we can expect around 90 cars at launch, though the source believes that number may vary depending on licensing issues. TDU3 will features vehicle types such as old sports cars, modern sports cars, electrics, hybrids “and more”. In terms of starter cars, you’ll have three options to select from; the Renault Clio RS, a Mitsubishi Evo and a Volkswagen Polo GTi.

Test Drive Unlimited 3 will have similar gameplay to the previous games in which you’ll have no limits on what you can do and will of course feature Houses you can buy, with more Houses than TDU1 and 2 combined. KT Racing are rebuilding some of their KT engine for TDU3 to feature improved visuals, and will be using the same physics engine as WRC 8 for the car physics.

Multiplayer seems to be a big focus for Test Drive Unlimited 3, with the source likening it to that of GTA Online. It will supposedly follow a live service model in which TDU3’s multiplayer will be frequently updated with big content updates such as “new exciting game modes” and most likely new cars and other new forms of content.

Kylotonn are aiming to for a Late 2020 release, much sooner than my predicted release from my recent next-gen racing game prediction piece, and will most likely be a launch title for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The source claims PS4 and Xbox One versions “could happen”, and that it will supposedly be a one-year Epic Store exclusive, arriving to Steam and Google Stadia after the exclusivity deal.

Whether or not any of this information is legit remains to be seen, however if the title is slated for a next-gen launch release this year, we will most likely here of the title’s existence in the coming months. KT Racing do have job openings for a new Test Drive game, so we at least know that much.

Be sure to stay tuned for future news and updates on Test Drive Unlimited 3.
