After months of uncertainty, Need for Speed Heat will be receiving its final update this week which will add the long-speculated cross-play feature, with the development team at Criterion Games shifting gears with full focus on the next Need for Speed game.

Announced over on EA website, General Manager of Criterion Matt Webster shared our first update on the Need for Speed franchise since the studio took the reigns of the series back in February this year.

As of June 9th, Need for Speed Heat will be the first EA title to offer cross-play, meaning that players – regardless of their platform – can jump into Palm City together. Players will have the option to opt in to races across PC (including Origin and Steam), PS4 and Xbox One, and will have the option to search for friends or other players who’ve got cross-play enabled.

Webster revealed that this will be Need for Speed Heat’s final update, as the team at Criterion shifts gears into the future with “full focus on developing the next Need for Speed game.” Rest assured, the team are listening to the feedback and believe that Heat offers a “terrific foundation to create the most expressive, most socially connected, action-packed game yet for Need for Speed fans and beyond.”

Lastly, with the release of Need for Speed (2015), Rivals and Heat on Steam, Webster teases more Need for Speed and Steam related announcements at EA Play Live on June 18th.

How do you feel about this announcement? Are you disappointed with the poor support Heat recieved or are you excited to get stuck into cross-play and looking forward to Criterion’s next NFS title? Share your thoughts below and stay tuned for all future Need for Speed news.
